Origins
This delicious drink originated during the time when refrigerators became available in Puerto Rico, allowing it to be kept cold; interestingly, it was also around that time—since the year 1900—that sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk started being sold, which are the two main ingredients in this recipe. The rest of the ingredients were already available in the country.
On the other hand, the name "Coquito" refers to a small coconut, which is the ingredient that slightly distinguishes it from other traditional punch recipes.
If you visit Puerto Rico, this is a drink you must try—absolutely. The good news is, you can find it in any supermarket, either bottled or in preparations. Just as you can buy it ready-made, you also have the option to make it yourself, since the ingredients are easily obtainable.
This drink is so tasty and creamy that it has been combined with other ingredients to create different flavors, such as strawberry, almonds, even Nutella; pistachio, and chocolate.
Some people modify the amount and type of liquor depending on whether they prefer it milder or stronger. Others prefer to prepare it and leave it in the fridge for a whole day to enhance its flavor. Still, some serve it garnished with nutmeg or just a pinch of cinnamon.
And, just in case you're curious, there are two similar drinks to Puerto Rican Coquito: the Venezuelan eggnog and cream punch.
