Origins and other valuable information
The origins of this drink date back to 1954. The story goes that a Puerto Rican bar owner asked the bartender to create an entirely new drink that would be unlike any other. The bartender, named Ramón and known as "Monchito," wanted the main ingredient to be coconut because it is characteristic of the country, so he selected some coconut cream, which was recently available.
Another story suggests that the drink dates from the 19th century, during the 1920s, when a Puerto Rican pirate prepared a beverage for his crew made with coconut, pineapple, and white rum. However, after his death, the drink was forgotten until Ramón prepared or reinvented it again.
The drink became more famous when Rupert Holmes released a song called "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)," featuring the piña colada as its star, which helped the cocktail gain popularity internationally.
As a fun fact, the piña colada has been awarded the title of the best beach drink multiple times, courtesy of National Geographic.
